Make a Wish

  • The Comet Wirtanen will make it’s closest approach to our planet on December 16, 2018 at a distance of 7 million miles.

  • And guess what ? It’s visible to the naked eye.

  • Since it’s gracing the sky in December, it’s already being called as Christmas Comet by few.

  • Comet 46P/Wirtanen with three-fourth miles in diameter was first discovered in 1948 by Carl Wirtanen.

  • It belongs to the Jupiter family of comets.

  • The comet has an orbital period of approximately 5.5 years.

  • Rosetta spacecraft was meant to study this comet but eventually went for 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

  • The Comet will be closest to the Sun on December 12,2018.

  • When it’s approach is closer to the Sun, you will be able to see the tails generated due to the solar radiation.

  • Yet another interesting factor is that you will be able to see the Geminids meteor shower at it’s peak, on the morning of December 15.

  • By December 16, the comet will be visible between the red star Aldebaran and the Pleiades star cluster.

  • As per the predictions, it will be near a magnitude of three to six, which will definitely enable us to view with the naked eye.

  • You won’t be able to get this view, this close, for yet another 20 years.

  • So get ready for the magnificent spectacle for the month of December 2018 and who knows even if it’s for a lifetime.

  • And do make a wish, if you know ☄
